Light designer Marc Brickman came up with the original concept of using motion graphics on movable LED video screens as a dynamic lighting source for the stage, as well as traditional video graphic projections for the Nine Inch Nails ‘Fragile’ tour. The screens were lowered flat over the band at the start of the show and simple graphics effects, like photocopy scans, helicopter whirls and spot lights, were used to create an industrial Sci-Fi feel.
A third of a way through the show, the beautiful ‘real world’ video work of Bill Viola (the world famous video artist) was shown on the screens as they rotated upto 90º.
For the remainder of the show the screens moved to various angles and positions, as the video content switched to industrial, biological, abstract and strobe graphics with an aggressive edit - ‘chaos contained’ was the brief, reflecting the industrial rock bands style of music.
