01-06. Winter print advert campaign (1993)
Print adverts for magazines including the usual gaming mags and trade press, but also included various lifestyle publications including Loaded, Penthouse, GQ, Dazed & Confused, The Face, FHM...
The first advert ‘Score Some Speed from a dealer near you’ was for the fastest driving game available, Virtua Racing, and caused some controversy (two questions in the House of Commons, a debate on late night tv, and about a dozen national newspaper articles). The second advert ‘Do it all with Ecco...’ also caused some headlines, but the press began realised that it was a marketing wheeze, and the free publicity calmed down! The strategy behind the ads was the beginning of a general re-positioning by the games industry looking for a much older demographic (late 20’s to 35 year olds instead of the traditional teenagers).
07-08. SEGA Snowboard Team (1994)
SSM created a snowboard team for SEGA to sponsor and take into the British, European and World Championships. The team consisted of two female and two male riders, representing the freestyle and speed disciplines. The press pack design was softened from the digi-punk first version, to reflect that the recipients were corporate and brand managers (the sponsors), rather than the snowboard community (the riders).
09. Typography (1993)
SSM Ltd specialised in bringing together corporate brands and the freesports of youth culture. Typography was designed to supplement pitches and commissions within this market.
